In April, the EUR/USD gained more than 5% against the USD as investors increasingly questioned the dollar’s dominance in the global financial system and turned to the single currency as an alternative. On Friday, April 25, Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said that the Japanese government decided on an emergency economic package to cushion the blow to industry and households from the massive US tariffs. The package includes increased support for corporate financing, as well as subsidies to lower gasoline prices and partial compensation for electricity bills for three months from July. The package will be financed from the reserve fund. This could put pressure on the currency, but positively for Japan’s Nikkei Index (JP225).

Gold fell to $3290 per ounce on Friday, reversing the gains made in the previous session after Beijing announced that it would exempt some US goods from 125% tariffs, signaling a thaw in the trade dispute and making bullion less attractive as a hedge. At the same time, the Dollar Index approached the 100 mark, boosting the value of gold in dollars for overseas buyers, and US Treasury yields rose as Fed officials reiterated their patient policy stance.
